Building Inspections
This department is responsible for all aspects of permits and inspections related to the various building codes in effect. Currently, the City of Smithville has adopted, and enforces the requirements in the following codes:
2006 International Building Code
2006 International Residential Code
2005 National Electrical Code
2006 International Plumbing Code
2006 International Mechanical Code
2006 International Fuel Gas Code
These Building Guidelines are provided to assist property owners and contractors with the orderly construction of residential projects within the provisions of the adopted building and zoning codes. Please read them carefully and understand that they do not include all code requirements, but are summarized for an efficient guideline. Should you have questions, or would like to review the adopted building codes, you may stop by the City Hall Annex at 113 W. Main.
Inspections are performed during regular business hours. From April 15 to October 15, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from October 16 to April 14th, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A minimum of twenty four (24) hours notice is required for any inspection, except Sewer inspection, which require a minimum of four hours notice. All questions related to the enforcement of these codes should be made to Todd Bash or Dennis Witt at (816) 866-2054.
Permits are generally required for all types of construction, including fences, decks and pools, as well as any building construction, including basement finishes, tenant finishes, room additions or new construction. Depending upon the type of work being performed, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits are also required. Permits must be issued prior to any work is performed. If work begins prior to the issuance of a permit, the permit fee will be double.
