Lead and Copper Rule
Understanding Lead and Copper in Your Drinking Water
Lead and copper can enter drinking water through plumbing materials, potentially causing health problems such as stomach distress and brain damage.
The Lead and Copper Rule (LCR)
To address this issue, the EPA introduced the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) in 1991, which has been updated over time.
2021 Revised Lead and Copper Rule (LCRR)
The latest update in 2021 enhances protection for children and communities by:
- Safeguarding children in schools and childcare facilities.
- Removing lead from drinking water.
- Empowering communities with crucial information.
- New Requirements Starting October 16, 2024
Under the revised rule, public water systems must:
- Conduct an initial service line inventory.
- Notify residents of known or potential lead service lines.
- Issue public notifications if lead levels exceed safe limits.
- Comply with reporting requirements.
