2026 Strategic Plan Update
The City of Smithville is updating its strategic plan, and community input is helping shape the priorities, goals and vision for Smithville moving forward. The City has received valuable feedback from residents and community members through the initial engagement process.
An important next step in the process is a community review of the Draft Strategic Plan. This will provide an opportunity to learn more about the draft plan, provide feedback and help inform the final plan.
Upcoming Opportunities for Community Involvement
- Presentation of Draft Strategic Plan: November 3 at 6:00 p.m. during the Board of Aldermen Work Session
- Community Review Online Survey: November 9 through November 30
- In-Person Community Review Sessions:
November 9: 6:00–7:30 p.m. at Mid-Continent Public Library, Smithville Branch
November 10: 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. at City Hall Board Room
Light refreshments will be provided. - Presentation of Final Strategic Plan: December 15 at 7:00 p.m. during the Board of Aldermen Regular Session

About the 2019 Strategic Plan Process
The City of Smithville embarked upon a new strategic planning process in 2019. The City contracted Future iQ to guide a Community Vision and Strategic Action Plan process for the community. The goal of this project was to create a vision that represents the whole community, reflects core community values address emerging trends and issues, imagines a preferred future, and promotes local action.
During the process there were many opportunities for involvement, including a Future Think Tank Workshop, community surveys, youth sessions, and a strategic planning community celebration. Data from these engagements can be found on the project website.
Community Vision
The Vision is to create "Smithville - a modern community oasis designed for 2030." The Community Strategic Action Plan directs efforts and resources toward the defined vision for the future employing a roadmap that is realistic, achievable and sustainable.
The key strategic pillars that support this vision include:

- Enhanced Recreation and Connectivity
- Diverse Housing and Neighborhood Options
- Strengthened Business and Economic Development
- Retention of Small-Town Feel and Sense of Community
Final Report
The Board of Aldermen adopted the strategic plan in November 2019.
