Citizens Academy - DEADLINE EXTENDED!

The Smithville Citizens Academy is a free, 8-week interactive program that provides insight to City services and operations and offers opportunities for civic engagement in the City. 

This program provides our citizens with a deeper understanding of how their City government works, and gives them a look at daily operations and services provided by their local government. The program sets the foundation for residents who are interested in furthering their civic knowledge, especially as it relates to government closest to the people.

Through presentations by city officials and tours of the city facilities, participants will benefit from a unique interactive learning and behind the scenes experience.

Project Updates
  • Commercial Ave Sidewalk: construction began June 17
  • Water Treatment Plant Improvements: ongoing
  • 144th Pump Station and West Bypass project: construction began on June 2, work in progress along 144th St near the pump station
  • Sidewalk Replacement Program (Harborview): Notification letters have been sent to property owners in areas identified by the City as having hazardous sidewalks. The Streets Division will begin this summer.
  • Diamond Crest Park Parking Lot: delayed due to water leak
  • Basin Maintenance Program: implementation began this month
  • Street Maintenance Program: Awarded to Asphaltic Surfaces, work will begin this Fall on Commercial Avenue (From 92 HWY to Meadow St).

Maintenance Updates  

  • Parks 
    • Cleaned up after July 4 weekend
    • Completed waterline and electrical work at Diamond Crest Park. Plan is for construction to start back up soon.
    • Brush-hogged green spaces
    • Mowed parks
  • Streets 
    • Crews conducted extensive tree trimming along Liberty St., targeting overgrown limbs that were encroaching on the roadway and obstructing signage.
    • A total of 12 full loads of brush were hauled back to the maintenance shop for disposal using dump trailers.
    • Regular mowing was performed on Bridge St. and various roadside right-of-way areas, improving roadside visibility and aesthetics.
    • Crews also mowed the river bottom, maintaining vegetation to minimize pest habitat and prevent overgrowth.
    • Patched multiple potholes on 176th St., using 35 bags of cold mix asphalt to restore safe driving conditions.
    • Crews used jackhammers and excavation tools to remove damaged curb and sidewalk sections in various locations, including areas reported through public service requests.
    • Prepared excavated sections for future concrete pours by ensuring proper base compaction and debris removal.
    • Loaded and staged form boards and materials at the work sites in preparation for scheduled repairs next week.
    • Maintenance yard around Helvey Park was also mowed and cleared in preparation for a scheduled DNR inspection, ensuring compliance with safety and visibility standards.
  • Utilities 
    • Total Drinking Water Production 8,388,000 gal
    • Completed all testing required at the WTP.
    • Repaired water service at 503 Rock Bridge Ct.
    • Replacement of the valves for filter #5 is complete.
    • Filter #4 backwash is now fully automated.
    • Completed 19 work orders
    • 60 locates completed
    • Treated 5,668,000 gallons of wastewater
    • Completed all testing required at the WWTP.
    • Completed annual sludge sample for the wastewater plant.
