Smithville Receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
The City of Smithville has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2024 budget, marking the sixth consecutive year the City has earned this recognition. The award reflects our ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in financial reporting. Special thanks to our Finance Department for their collaborative efforts in achieving this honor.

Community Engagement Updates Senior Center Updates
  • Submitted our 2026 Grant Request to Clay County Senior Services
  • Had a record-breaking turnout for the cookout lunch on Wednesday with 51 people attending and 53 meals sold!
  • Next week on August 6 at 11:30AM, there will be a town hall meeting at the Senior Center during which nominations for open Senior Center Board positions will be accepted. Those positions are President, Secretary, and Member-at-Large. They will serve a two-year term. Elections will be held August 20.
Project Updates
  • Commercial Ave Sidewalk: construction began June 17, construction ongoing
  • Water Treatment Plant Improvements: ongoing
  • 144th Pump Station and West Bypass project: construction began on June 2, work in progress along 144th St near the pump station. 
  • Sidewalk Replacement Program (Harborview): in progress
  • Diamond Crest Park Parking Lot: delayed due to water leak
  • Basin Maintenance Program: implementation began this month
  • Street Maintenance Program: Awarded to Asphaltic Surfaces. Location: Commercial Avenue (From 92 HWY to Meadow St). Work will begin after completion of Commercial Sidewalk Project. 

Maintenance Updates  

  • Parks 
    • Lined and painted 6 football fields
    • Started lining and painting soccer fields at Heritage Park and Smith’s Fork Park
    • Mowed throughout City Parks
    • Cleaned and maintained City Parks
    • Prepared for Hot Summer Nights Special Event
  • Streets
    • Roadside mowing was completed under several work orders to maintain visibility and safety on city streets.
    • Crews used 22 tons of asphalt on South Bridge Street and an additional 5 tons for pothole and patching work, including repairs at 603 Indian Trail and 169 Highland.
    • New sidewalk and curb sections were poured at multiple addresses, including Woodhaven, Essex, Spinnaker, and Amesbury, totaling approximately 85 feet.
    • Equipment Maintenance included installing a quick-attach wire for the skid loader, fabricating an inspection door for dump truck, and addressing leaks in the Bobcat sweeper.
  • Utilities 
    • Total Drinking Water Production 7,379,000 gal
    • Treated 12,553,000 gallons of wastewater
    • Completed 19 work orders and 70 locates
    • Completed all testing required at the WTP and WWTP
    • Painters are almost done sand blasting and priming the pipe gallery at the water plant. Paint is supposed to be completed by the end of the week.
    • Staff removed and cleaned the intake screen at the raw water building due to lower GPM coming into the plant.
    • Due to the large amount of rain the wastewater plant could not keep up with the flows causing an overflow. Had to complete a DNR report and conduct a cleanup of the facility. All issues have been resolved.
    • Staff completed monthly meter reads.
    • Staff cleaned the 3 check valves at the WWTP influent pump station. All 3 were clogged with wipes and debris. We were only able to get 1 pump working. Ace Pipe Cleaning is scheduled to clean the station next week.
