Pay Rate: $25.58 - $35.81/hr

Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Experience: Five (5) years in construction, infrastructure maintenance, heavy equipment operation, leadership, and/or supervisory experience.

Minimum Preferred Certificates must be obtained within 6 months:

  • NIMS level ICS100 and ICS700 training
  • New hire construction safety orientation
  • Confined Space in Construction
  • OSHA- 10
  • Welding Safety
  • Electric Safety

Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License, CDL-B with air brake endorsement preferred

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

A Public Works Crew Leader performs supervisory duties related to the operation, maintenance, and preparation of the Streets Division; to ensure essential services are provided to maintain the public infrastructure as well as provide for public safety, health, and welfare.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

The following duties are normal for this position.  However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  1. Leads and trains new employees and coordinates cross-training opportunities; coaches and mentor staff to meet goals and maintain motivation.
  2. Schedules daily work assignments and reprioritize assignments as needed to ensure timely completion of work. Prepare documents to record daily work activities.
  3. Completes time sheets and completes work schedule to accommodate approved time off.
  4. Ensures proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment is completed; coordinates maintenance as needed.
  5. Responds to customer service inquiries, providing appropriate follow-up, referral, or resolution.
  6. Ensure inventory and orders supplies as needed.
  7. Responds to emergency situations concerning malfunctioning equipment; analyzes situation and takes appropriate action. Notifies Supervisor of servicing required by outside vendor.
  8. Ensure all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  9. Report all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting.
  10. Perform operational duties with crew members. Operates heavy and light equipment, and power and hand tools as needed.
  11. Provides backup assistance to other department personnel as needed.
  12. Maintains appropriate records including complete equipment repair history, work orders, daily reports, and other related data.
  13. Completes written records of labor and materials used for each work project.
  14. Reports to work for after-hour needs, as assigned.
  15. Perform emergency repairs and work, as necessary.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES

  1. Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of tools, equipment, and facility systems.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with the operation and maintenance of equipment, construction equipment, and shop tools including, but not limited to chainsaws, blowers, string trimmers, welders, oxy-acetylene torches, power saws, drills, sewer snakes, earth drills, aerators, sprayers, and spraying equipment.
  3.   Knowledge of and experience with the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as, but not limited to mowing equipment, tractors, dump trucks, motor graders, backhoes, wheel loaders, trenchers, aerators, seeders, personnel lifts, skid-steer loaders, and full-size pickups.
  1. Ability to adapt and take control of situations, dictating subordinate activities in a responsible manner.
  2. Ability to instruct and train in methods and procedures.
  3. Ability to organize, assign, and modify the work assignment of others, and (re)-establish priorities to meet deadlines. Knowledge of traffic safety principles.
  4. Knowledge of American Traffic Safety Service Association (ATSSA) as a certified flagger.
  5. Knowledge of safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
  6. Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.
  7. Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  8. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
  9. Knowledge of utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation near underground and overhead utility facilities.
  10. Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
  11. Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
  12. Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely near vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
  13. Ability to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others.
  14. Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
  15. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  16. Knowledge of computer software and GIS is needed for this position.
  17. Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  18. Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
  19. Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  20. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position.
  21. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in English with staff, administration, and the public in both written and verbal form.
