The Big Takeaways - July 21, 2026

The Board of Aldermen met in Work Session on Tuesday evening. Finance Director Rick Welch presented on the annual TIF Report. Economic Development Attorney Megan Miller was also in attendance to provide clarification on the annual update.

The Board of Aldermen took the following action during the Regular Session:

  • Approved the July 7, 2026, Board of Aldermen Work Session Minutes
  • Approved the July 7, 2026, Board of Aldermen Regular Session Minutes 
  • Approved a Resolution authorizing the purchase of authorizing the purchase of winter materials from Hutchinson Salt for the 2026-2027 winter season in the amount of $69.50 per ton. 
  • Approved a Resolution authorizing Mayor to execute the agreement with CDL Electric Company for the purchase and installation of a Rapid Warning automated command and control system for the City’s existing outdoor warning siren system, in the amount not to exceed $34,476. 
  • Approved a Resolution approving a water and wastewater leak adjustment for Deb Dotson in the amount of $142.83. 
  • Approved a  Resolution issuing a liquor license to Pack Restaurants, LLC, Pablo Acebedo, Managing Officer, doing business as 169 Café located at 201-203 South US 169 Highway. 
  • Approved on second reading an Ordinance changing the zoning classifications or districts of certain lands located in the City of Smithville, Missouri and approving a preliminary plat and development agreement for Heritage Farms subdivision.
  • Approved on first and second reading an Ordinance authorizing and directing the Mayor to execute a Sidewalk Improvements Agreement with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MoDOT) for the Second Creek Sidewalk Project.
  • Approved on first reading Ordinance changing the zoning classifications or districts of certain lands located in the City of Smithville, Missouri. 
  • Approved on first and second reading an Ordinance authorizing and directing the Mayor to execute a Surface Transportation Block Grant Program Supplemental Agreement with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for construction of the Bridge Street Roundabout.
  • Approved on first reading an Ordinance amending the zoning Ordinance of the City of Smithville, Missouri and granting a Conditional Use Permit to Nextera Energy for a Battery Energy Storage Facility at 13213 North 169 Highway. 
  • Approved on first reading an Ordinance vacating and discontinuing a portion of a public street. 
  • Approved on first reading an Ordinance amending Sections of Chapter 400 of the Zoning Code related to fences. 
  • A Resolution issuing a Temporary Liquor License to Smithville Main Street District for Hot Summer Nights to be held Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Maintenance Updates

  • Parks
    • Marked out and painted 17 soccer and football fields
    • Repaired water leak for football irrigation
    • Reorganized and cleaned the shop yard
    • Removed weeds from baseball fields
  • Streets
    • Inlet install of parking lot behind City Hall
    • Approach to parking lot demo and replaced sidewalk on W. Meadow St. 
    • Fix mini excavator cylinder arm rebuild and install  
    • Returned flags to American Legion.
    • Police pole installed 15800 N. Prospect St.  
    • Clean gravel and remove sediment sewer sock on Park Dr.
    • Remove tree branch off Main St  
    • Eagle Ridge storm drain backfill 
  • Utilities
    • Total Drinking Water Production 8,579,000 gal.
    • Completed all testing required at the WTP.
    • Conducted weekly chemical level checks at the WTP for ordering.
    • Backwashed filters 1,2,3,4 and 5 at the WTP.
    • Continue working on the high service room rehab. Replacing bolts and coating the floor.
    • Prepped, primed and working on painting the handrails around the filters at the WTP.
    • Rotating assembly on pump #1 went out WTP
    •  Repaired broken valve on bleach tank #1
    • 5 Bact samples taken
    • Completed 22 work orders
    • 73 locates completed
    • Completed all testing required at WWTP
    • Treated 4,901,000 gallons of wastewater
    • Completed weekly checks of all booster station and towers in the distribution system.
    • Collected and delivered 4 E-coli samples to the KCMO laboratory.
    • Completed grounds maintenance at the WWTP and WTP
    • Completed monthly disconnects for non-payments
    • We hauled 44 loads of sludge and applied 88,000 Gallons to the field.
